What is a sideshaft?
A sideshaft is a system that transfers torque from a differential to the driven wheels allowing wheel movement due to steering or suspension movement. This system has three major elements:
- Inboard Constant Velocity Joint (CVJ)
- Interconnecting shaft
- Outboard Constant Velocity Joint (CVJ)
In most applications, the inboard CV Joint is a plunge joint that allows the effective length of the sideshaft to change due to suspension travel. In front (or steer) axle applications, the outboard joint must transfer torque effectively through a wide angle (up to 52 degrees). In rear axle applications, joint operating angles are much lower.
Why use GKN Driveline Sideshafts?
GKN Driveline understands the requirements and characteristics of front wheel, rear-wheel and four-wheel drive vehicle design to meet the varying needs of all types of vehicle from the electrically operated through to light trucks, sports cars, luxury cars and 4x4 vehicles. GKN Driveline appreciates the importance of dynamic performance, noise, vibration, durability, efficiency and weight saving in achieving the vehicle characteristics of power delivery, vehicle handling, comfort and reliability.
